The city of Astorga appeared in the same time than the city of León, which means in the first centuries AD. It was also a roman city whose walls are still apparent nowadays. It belongs to the Way of Compostela and is visited by many pilgrims every year.
It has two main monuments : the cathedral of Santa Maria (above) which was built on the 15th century, and the episcopal palace (below) made by Gaudi, a famous Spanish architect, at the end of the 19th century.
Las Medulas is a moutainous site which was exploited from the 1st century BC to the 3rd century AD by the Romans for its gold resources. It belongs to the UNESCO heritage. Today, we can visit it and climb until the top of its mountains.
I had the chance to visit both of the sites with the Eramus group. The monuments of Astorga are really nice but except that, there are not many things to do there. I prefered the climbing of Las Medulas, in the woods with impressive giant trees and view at the end that was gorgeous !
